Boron carbide is generated by the high temperature smelting of boric acid and carbon materials in an electric furnace, with a theoretical density of 2.52g/cm3, a melting point of 2450 °C, and a microhardness of 4950kgf/mm2. Its hardness is second only to diamond and cubic boron nitride, with high temperature resistance, acid and alkali corrosion resistance, high strength, good chemical stability, light specific gravity and other characteristics, and has been widely used in many new material fields.

Uses of boron carbide
| Application of boron carbide in sapphire wafers (LEDs). From the perspective of materials and abrasive science, the materials used to process and grind sapphire crystals are synthetic diamond, boron carbide, silica. Due to the excessive hardness of synthetic diamond (10 on the Mohs scale), it can scratch the surface when grinding sapphire wafers, affect the light transmittance of the wafers, and is expensive. The hardness of silica is not enough (7 on the Mohs scale), and the grinding force difference is time-consuming and labor-intensive in the grinding process. Therefore, boron carbide abrasives (9.3 on the Mohs hardness scale) are ideal for processing and grinding sapphire crystals. |
| Used in the industrial field Make bulletproof materials, such as bulletproof shrapnel in bulletproof vests, ceramic bulletproof tiles in the cockpit of aircraft pilots, and ceramic bulletproof plates for modern armored personnel carriers and tanks. |
| Used in the nuclear industry Boron carbide is used to make control rods, regulating rods, accident rods, safety bars, shielding rods for nuclear reactors, boron carbide tiles for radiation protection, plates or neutron absorbers (made of powder with high B10 content), or mixed with cement to make nuclear reactor shields, which is an important functional element second only to nuclear fuel elements. |
| Used in the field of refractories Boron carbide as an antioxidant additive is used in low-carbon magnesia carbon bricks, castables. It is used in the steel industry for key parts with high temperature resistance and erosion resistance. |
| Used in other engineering ceramic materials Boron carbide makes nozzles for sandblasting machines, high-pressure water cutting machine nozzles, sealing rings, ceramic abrasives, etc |
| Used in general industrial fields Boron carbide is made into welding rods to enhance the strength of Han noodles; Used as grinding and polishing materials, abrasives for water cutting and emery abrasive correction materials; Polishing and grinding in the jewelry industry. |
| Electrical properties of boron carbide applications Boron carbide-graphite thermocouples consist of a graphite tube, a boron carbide rod, and a boron nitride bushing in between. In inert gases and vacuum, the use temperature is up to 2200℃.At 600~2200Between °C, the potential difference has a good linear relationship with temperature. |
| Application of boron carbide as a chemical raw material Boron carbide powder is activated by halogen and can be used as a boronizing agent for steel and other alloys to infiltrate boron on the surface of steel to form a thin layer of iron boride to enhance the strength and properties of the material. |
